How creator subscription platforms work

A creator subscription platform lets fans pay a creator directly for content, attention and access. Here is how the money, the content and the safety checks fit together, using MyRoomz as the example.

The basic idea

A creator has a page. She publishes posts: photos, videos, audio and text. Fans pay her for some of it, and the platform runs the payments, the verification and the storage in return for a fee.

Following and subscribing are different

Following a creator is free and shows you the posts she makes free. Subscribing is a monthly payment that opens her subscriber posts. She chooses who each post is for. A subscriber post still appears to followers as a locked card, which is how a page advertises itself.

All the ways a creator earns

  • Monthly subscriptions, with free trials and discounts if she wants them
  • Single posts sold on their own, and paid messages
  • Tips on posts, in chats and during lives
  • Live streams, free or ticketed
  • Auctions for content or for physical items
  • Private video and voice calls
  • Gifts and funding goals

Where the money goes

  1. A fan adds money to a MyRoomz wallet by card.
  2. When he subscribes or buys, the price comes out of that wallet.
  3. MyRoomz keeps its fee, a flat 10%, and the creator gets the other 90%.
  4. Her share is held for five days, then becomes available to withdraw, from A$20, to her bank.

Who checks what

  • Every member passes an age check with a live selfie before browsing creators.
  • Every creator passes a government ID check before posting.
  • Anyone else who appears in a post must approve it before it is published.

Questions people ask

›Is it free to join?

Yes, for fans and creators. Fans pay only for what they choose. Creators pay only the fee on what they earn.

›Do fans need to store a card?

No. Fans top up a wallet by card on our payment provider’s page, and purchases come out of the wallet. MyRoomz never stores card numbers.

›How much does the platform keep?

At MyRoomz, a flat 10%. Many well known platforms keep 20%. Our fee calculator shows the difference on your own numbers.

›Can other members see what I buy?

No. A creator can see who subscribes to her, but other members cannot see what you buy.
